Breaking the rules to fix what's not working

defying the dyslexia narrative

Author

One In Five: The dyslexia diagnosis of Boas’ son opened four years of legal battles that drained her savings, battered her self-esteem and pulled her family apart in search of an appropriate education. Ultimately, she found herself fuming over the ways our government and schools fail to provide all children with an equal chance to learn.

Both a rallying cry and an invaluable resource, One in Five (Simon and Schuster, August 2020) chronicles the national education crisis as it impacts the one in five children who have dyslexia. Boas wrote this book because too many parents feel isolated and defeated in their struggle to get their kids the education they deserve.

Boas draws on insights from over 200 parents, educators, and experts and provides critical insights on how the system can be “hacked”: sometimes, you need to cut through the invisible red tape of school funding, IEPs, specialized teacher training and more.

INVISIBLE RED TAPE

As  parents of children with dyslexia, each day asks us to face a ribbon of obstacles—the ‘invisible red tape.’ It exists almost everywhere in America, and it threatens to wind itself around us until we’re mummified and silent. This site exposes the educational inequalities that face children with dyslexia, and provides an insider’s guide to practical solutions I learned while writing my book. There are interesting new school formats to consider, practices for collecting data to inform your assertions, and inspiring stories of how others innovated on behalf of their kids.

DEFYING EDUCATION INEQUALITY

ENTREPRENEUR

Glinda is a subscription-based, e-advising platform that connects special needs parents with a dedicated education advisor.

The special-ed system is confusing. While parents run circles around its rules and reasons, it can steal years of learning away from their children at a critical time of development. Additionally, this delay puts students at risk for social and emotional stresses, repeated grades, or, ultimately, drop-out syndrome.

With efficient, consistent support in navigating the education system, parents can avoid this fate. But this support didn’t exist–until now. Glinda saves parents time, money, and sanity, by connecting them to the information they need to get their kids what they deserve.
